AN EPIC JOURNEY

The Palea Earrings

Get lost in the glamorous history of the Palea earrings. Consider the individual journeys of each component and how they managed to make their way to the surface to become a “modern artifact”.  These humble organic treasures are now encapsulated in hand-fabricated sterling silver bezel and prong settings to be enjoyed and showcased aboveground forever.  View the listing in COLLECTION for more photos!

Gilded Magnetite Jade (California) —

A high quality black jade containing magnetite ‘chrysanthemum bursts’ which have been electroplated with yummy 24 karat gold. The gold adheres to to the metallic inclusions and produces an organic brushstroke effect. Since these cabochons are lovely from every angle, I chose to keep the settings open in the back.

Pyritized Ammonite Negatives (Germany) —

Formed by the natural impressions of ammonites and discovered in a German pyrite bed, these particular specimens were cut by Bill Herar of Rare Earth Mining Co. and mimic miniature bronze sculptures. The subtle shine of the pyrite spirals can certainly mesmorize, and I can’t help but think of the little creatures that created them eons ago! (Forgive my dry and cracked California metalsmithing hands!)

Fossilized Palm Root (Indonesia) —

After being buried under hundreds of yards of sediment, the organic matter of these palm tree roots were replaced by the silica in underground waters, preserving every minute detail of the woodsy specimen. Over the course of time, the wood was replaced by microcrystalline quartz — turning the roots to stone! Think about the site where this palm tree grew. How old was the tree before its roots fossilized and were dug up? Did anyone ever sit beneath this tree or did the process occur before humankind existed? The romance lies in the wonderment.
